A friend of mine uses Wenge for his fretboards, bridges and in his five piece necks (three piece mahogany or walnut and two pieces thin wenge). His guitars sound wonderful. Wenge has deep open grain and can be splintery but it is workable. There are several electric bass manufacturers who have used wenge in their necks, fretboards and bodies. I have read of someone using it in acoustic backs and sides, but I can’t remember who it was. I would think it would be difficult to bend, but so are other woods commonly used in acoustics.

I think John Kinnaird has built with it.

Wenge is tight and straight grained across the entire width of backs and sides. This wood is heavier stiffer and lager pores than IRW. I am not real crazy about it but it is a descent replacement for IRW. It does have nice look under finish just very monogamous appearance.

So it looks like it believes in finding just the one mate for life, then....

My first acoustic guitar was built from Wenge. It is pretty stiff stuff and not a real easy bend. It can be brittle and prone to cracks of your not careful. Sonically similar to EIR IMO. And Micheal is right, big pores and lots of them.

One mate for life could be called "monotonous", I suppose!

Thanks! Took 21 years to perfect it!
